Charlotte is North Carolina's largest municipality, and its citywide curbside collection program is easy to get wrong, because the simple day-of-week answer most people search for is not published as a list. Your collection day is tied to your address, not your neighborhood, and the whole program applies only inside Charlotte city limits.

Short Answer — Charlotte Trash Pickup at a Glance

City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services collects garbage once a week on your assigned day, yard waste once a week on that same day, and recycling every other week on the same day as garbage. Recycling runs on a rotation: every home is assigned either a green week or an orange week. Your exact day and week depend on your address and must be looked up — no neighborhood day list exists.

Bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, and appliances are not collected automatically; they must be scheduled in advance online, by calling CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600, or through the CLT+ app. Carts go to the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day, no earlier than the day before, and come back in by midnight. All of this applies only to addresses inside Charlotte city limits — check that first.

Who Provides Service — and How to Look Up Your Day

Inside the city, City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services is the provider. Single-family homes are served by municipal crews. The lineup covers garbage, recycling, yard waste, and bulky waste, plus multi-family service, disability and special services, household hazardous waste, and cart repair and replacement.

Because there is no universal day list, the lookup is the whole game. Four routes all lead to the same answer:

  1. My Charlotte Lookup — the city's address-based tool, which returns your collection day and your green or orange recycling week.
  2. The Mecklenburg geoportal at mcmap.org/geoportal/?g=trash — a map-based alternative.
  3. curbit.charlottenc.gov — the city's collection information site.
  4. CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600 — a person who can confirm your day, week, and eligibility.

Two things to internalize: service time of day is not guaranteed (the city says time may vary each week; only the assigned day and week are fixed), and a neighbor's day tells you nothing reliable about your own address.

Step-by-Step: Getting Trash, Recycling, and Yard Waste Collected

  1. Confirm your address is inside city limits and eligible for curbside service. This is the first filter, not an afterthought.
  2. Look up your day and recycling week by address using My Charlotte Lookup, the geoportal, curbit.charlottenc.gov, or 311.
  3. Use city-issued carts only. Eligible addresses get one 95/96-gallon garbage cart and one recycling cart. Only city-issued carts are collected.
  4. Bag and tie all garbage with the lid closed. No loose garbage, nothing outside the cart, and no hazardous waste, construction debris, or electronics. Lithium batteries and vape pens are not eligible.
  5. Keep recyclables loose (unbagged), empty, clean, and dry. Cardboard must be cut or torn into small pieces. Nothing outside the recycling cart is collected.
  6. Prepare yard waste to spec — paper bags, or a personal container weighing no more than 75 pounds.
  7. Set carts at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day, no sooner than the day before.
  8. Bring carts in by midnight on collection day.
  9. Schedule bulky items in advance — never assume a curb pile will be taken.
  10. Report a missed pickup within 48 hours by calling CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600.

Cart Rules and Placement

  • Within 6 feet of the curb.
  • Handle facing the property.
  • 3 feet of clearance from obstacles such as mailboxes, poles, and vehicles.
  • Never block the sidewalk.
  • Out by 6 a.m. on collection day, no earlier than the day before.
  • Removed by midnight on collection day.

On inventory: a residential address is limited to two garbage carts and two recycling carts total. Each eligible address receives one of each; one additional cart of each type is available for purchase for a one-time fee, up to that maximum. Only city-issued carts are collected.

Recycling — Every Other Week on Green or Orange Weeks

Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as garbage. Your home is assigned a green week or an orange week, and the assignment comes from the address lookup. The city publishes a downloadable 2026 recycling calendar in English and Spanish.

Accepted: cardboard cut or torn small; plastic bottles and jugs with necks; paper and magazines; milk and juice cartons; glass bottles and jars with lids on; empty metal cans.

Not accepted: uncut cardboard; food; shredded paper; paper plates; plastic bags; food trays; cups and plasticware; takeout containers; styrofoam; napkins; diapers; hoses; scrap metal and auto parts; cords.

Mecklenburg County hosts the full accepted-recyclables list used by Charlotte curbside customers at wipeoutwaste.mecknc.gov. When in doubt, leave it out rather than contaminating the load.

Yard Waste — Weekly, With Preparation Limits

Yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as garbage, from the curb, when it meets city preparation requirements. Collected material is turned into mulch and compost.

  • Leaves, grass clippings, small branches: paper bags, or loose in a personal container weighing no more than 75 pounds.
  • Limbs: under 4 feet long and under 6 inches in diameter.
  • Brush piles: no longer than 5 feet, no higher than 3 feet, with 2 feet between piles.

Yard waste sizing guidance has appeared in slightly different forms across city materials over time. Follow the FAQ numbers above, and if a load is turned away, confirm current limits with 311. No yard waste is collected during the MLK Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day weeks in 2026.

Bulky Items — Schedule First, Don't Dump at the Curb

Bulky waste covers household furnishings, appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment, and similar oversized items. It is not on a regular route. Schedule it by:

  • The city's online bulky item service request form
  • CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600
  • The CLT+ app

Check the bulky item eligibility list first to confirm your item qualifies, and do not skip scheduling — unscheduled items left at the curb can draw a fine.

2026 Holiday Collection Schedule

The 2026 pattern changed from prior years, so do not rely on what you remember.

MLK Jr. Day (Mon Jan 19), Memorial Day (Mon May 25), and Labor Day (Mon Sept 7):

  • No collection on the holiday Monday.
  • Monday and Tuesday routes run starting Tuesday, and crews work through Friday until all routes are complete.
  • No Saturday collection and no yard waste those weeks.

Thanksgiving (Thu Nov 26) — one-day delay for Thursday and Friday routes, with Friday collections on Saturday Nov 28. Christmas (Fri Dec 25) — one-day delay for Friday routes, with Friday collection on Saturday Dec 26.

No change to residential collection in 2026: New Year's Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, and Veterans Day.

During a holiday week, set carts out on your normal day and leave them out until collected. Call 311 if nothing is picked up within 48 hours of your normal day.

Christmas Trees in 2026

Single-family natural trees go to the curb for yard waste collection on your regular day and must be free of decorations. Artificial trees and all wreaths are scheduled as bulky items. In multi-family communities with dumpsters or compactors, natural trees, artificial trees, and wreaths are all scheduled as bulky items throughout January.

Missed Pickups and Cart Repair

If your cart was out on time and was not emptied, report it within 48 hours by calling CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600.

For a damaged cart, call 311 or email cartsadmin@charlottenc.gov with four details: your name, your address, which cart (garbage, recycling, or both), and the damaged part (wheel, lid, axle, barrel, or bar).

You can also text your collection day to 73224 for alerts in English or Spanish. Re-register after you move.

Fees and Costs

Curbside residential garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection is a city service, and one garbage cart plus one recycling cart is provided per eligible address. An additional cart of each type is available for purchase for a one-time fee, with a maximum of two of each. Current city pages do not publish the dollar amount, so this guide does not state one — call CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600 for the current figure. The city does not currently provide commercial recycling collection.

Apartments, Condos, and Townhomes

Multi-family housing works differently. The city provides garbage, recycling, and bulky waste collection to multifamily properties under its contract with Waste Pro of North Carolina, Inc., in place since July 1, 2018.

  • Dumpster garbage must be bagged.
  • Bulky items go at the designated location near the dumpster — never inside it or a compactor.
  • No yard waste collection for dumpster or compactor communities, and yard waste may not go in dumpsters. Contact your property manager.
  • Collection days vary by community — your property manager is the source of truth, not a single-family schedule.

City Limits vs. Mecklenburg County — Check Before You Assume

A "Charlotte" mailing address does not mean a city-served address. City curbside collection applies only to addresses inside Charlotte city limits. City policy explicitly excludes areas outside the limits and unincorporated Mecklenburg County, along with interstate highways and ramps and public parks. Dead animal collection is likewise limited to streets, public rights-of-way, and residences within the City.

If your address falls outside the limits, the documented options are a permitted private hauler or a Mecklenburg County drop-off center.

Mecklenburg County Solid Waste (LUESA) — 2145 Suttle Ave, Charlotte, NC 28208; 980-314-3867; SolidWaste@MeckNC.gov; Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

North Mecklenburg Disposal and Recycling Center — 12300 Statesville Rd, Huntersville; Mon–Sat 7 a.m.–4 p.m.

The permitted hauler list comes through CharMeck 311 at 704-336-7600 (TTY 704-432-1649, Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–7 p.m.) or solidwaste@mecklenburgcountync.gov. No county-run curbside program for unincorporated areas is documented here — the confirmed county options are drop-off centers and permitted private haulers. Confirm before assuming.

Resident Scenarios

New to a "Charlotte" address. Before setting anything out, confirm with 311 that the address is inside city limits and eligible for curbside service. Many Charlotte-address homes are in unincorporated Mecklenburg County and are not on the city route.

Trash taken, recycling skipped. That is usually the rotation, not an error. Unless it was your green or orange week, there was no recycling run. Check My Charlotte Lookup or the 2026 recycling calendar.

Moving out with a mattress and sofa. Book a bulky item collection online, through 311, or in the CLT+ app. Do not leave them at the curb.

Nothing collected on the Monday of a holiday week. That is the 2026 pattern: routes run starting Tuesday and continue through Friday. Leave carts out, and remember there is no yard waste that week.

Apartment dumpster overflowing. That is a property-manager issue. Multi-family collection runs under the city's Waste Pro contract, and days vary by community.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming your day matches your neighbor's — look it up by address.
  • Assuming a Charlotte mailing address means city service.
  • Bagging recyclables; they go in loose, empty, clean, and dry.
  • Leaving cardboard uncut in the recycling cart.
  • Setting carts out earlier than the day before.
  • Leaving carts at the curb past midnight on collection day.
  • Putting extra bags outside the cart — nothing outside the cart is collected.
  • Putting lithium batteries or vape pens in the garbage cart.
  • Leaving bulky items at the curb without an appointment.
  • Putting yard waste in a dumpster-community dumpster.
  • Calling 311 the same afternoon of a holiday-week miss — leave carts out and call only after 48 hours.
