Last checked: 2026-09-09. The city does not publish a static list of pickup days by street, ZIP code, or neighborhood, so your day can only be confirmed for your own address — use the lookup below before relying on anything here.

Before you act: service follows Fayetteville city limits, not mailing addresses or ZIP codes. If you are in unincorporated Cumberland County, Hope Mills, Spring Lake, or another municipality, the city does not collect your trash — see the city-limits section below and call Cumberland County Solid Waste Management at 910-321-6920.

Fayetteville Trash Pickup: The Short Answer

The City of Fayetteville Solid Waste Division runs five curbside streams under one annual residential solid waste fee: household waste weekly on your assigned day; yard waste weekly when containerized; recycling every other week on an A week/B week rotation; bulky items on B weeks; and large limbs on A weeks. Bulky items and large limbs both arrive on your regular yard-waste day.

Carts go to the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day — one foot from the curb, handles facing your home, at least four feet from mailboxes, cars, trees, and other carts — and come back in by the end of collection day.

Two surprises worth absorbing first:

  1. Recycling is not weekly. Fayetteville moved to biweekly recycling on August 1, 2021. Your recycling day is the same weekday as your trash day, but only on your A or B week — right day, wrong week means no pickup.
  2. Bulky items and large limbs are not on-demand. They ride the same A/B rotation: large limbs on A weeks, bulky items on B weeks.

The biggest catch: there is no universal day list. Days are address-specific and come only from a street-number-plus-street-name lookup or a phone call. Any site naming a day for "your neighborhood" is guessing.

Quick Answers

  • What day is trash picked up? Once a week, on an address-specific day found only in the city's address lookup or by calling 910-433-1329.
  • What time does the cart go out? By 6 a.m. on collection day, one foot from the curb, handles facing your home, four feet clear of obstructions.
  • Is recycling really every other week? Yes — biweekly on the A/B schedule, on the same weekday as your household waste, since August 1, 2021.
  • Is yard waste included? Yes, weekly, but only when containerized in a green or brown cart, plastic bag, or 32-gallon lidded can.
  • Are leaves raked to the curb anymore? Loose leaves and pine straw are vacuumed only November through February; the rest of the year they must be containerized.
  • How do I get bulky items picked up? Up to five free items on a B week, on your yard-waste day; six or more, carpet, or a contractor's debris must be paid for and scheduled.
  • When are large limbs collected? On A weeks, cut to 5 feet long and 6 inches in diameter, in piles no more than 3 feet high and 10 cubic yards.
  • How much does it cost? One annual residential solid waste fee — the published schedule shows $285.00 per year, with a further $10 annual increase approved for FY2027. Re-verify before paying.
  • What if my pickup is missed? Leave it at the curb; crews return later the same day or by the end of the next collection day, then report it through FayFixIt or 910-433-1329.
  • Do I get city service with a Fayetteville mailing address? Not necessarily — service follows city limits, not ZIP codes.

Local Basics — Who Collects, Cart Colors, and Your Day Lookup

Household waste is collected by city crews using automated side-loader trucks: the driver stays in the cab and a mechanical arm lifts the cart, which is why placement and lid clearance decide whether your cart is emptied. Recycling cart collection is a contract service. Yard waste, large limbs, and bulky items are collected by city crews, all under the same annual fee.

Cart colors: green and brown carts take household and yard waste; blue takes recycling only; and household waste must never be mixed with yard waste in the same cart. The city provides one green and one blue 96-gallon cart per single-family address inside city limits; carts stay with the residence, so call 910-433-1329 if one is missing.

No published day list exists. Your days come from:

  • the address generator on the city's Solid Waste Collection Schedule page (street number plus street name), which returns household waste, recyclable, and yard waste days — the same lookup is also linked from the city's recycling page (fayettevillenc.gov/recycling);
  • the 1-FAY Call Center at 910-433-1329;
  • FayFixIt for requests and reports, not schedule lookups.

The city states recycling runs on the household-waste day and that bulky items and large limbs come on the regular yard-waste day. It does not state that every address's yard-waste day equals its household-waste day — only your lookup settles that.

Step-by-Step: Getting Your Carts Collected

  1. Confirm the service area. City service covers single-family addresses inside city limits and residential units in multi-family properties of 7 units or fewer. Complexes above 7 units arrange commercial collection.
  2. Confirm both carts exist. Call 910-433-1329 if not.
  3. Look up your days and your A or B week. Write the result down.
  4. Bag household waste before it goes in the green or brown cart, and tie the bags.
  5. Keep household waste to two city carts maximum per collection day, in any green/brown mix.
  6. Roll carts out by 6 a.m.: one foot from the curb, handles facing the home, four feet from any cart, mailbox, car, fence, or tree. Lids on a full cart should stand open no more than about 6 to 8 inches.
  7. On your A or B week, put the blue cart out the same weekday, recyclables loose and unbagged.
  8. Containerize yard waste for the weekly yard-waste collection.
  9. Bring carts back by the end of collection day and store them beside or behind the home, out of easy view from the street, as the city's ordinance expects on non-collection days.
  10. Never set out extra bags beside or on top of carts or non-city containers — they are not collected.

Drivers tag carts they cannot service. Open lids, protruding bags, carts within four feet of an obstruction, and prohibited material all stop the pickup until fixed.

Household Waste: Weekly, Two Carts, and What Is Banned

Household waste is the non-recyclable stream — garbage, discarded clothing, toys, sweepings, rags — in the 96-gallon city-issued carts. City ordinance (Chapter 22, Section 22-22) requires weekly residential collection, and the city confirms the weekly cadence. Since July 1, 2023 the city collects a maximum of two 96-gallon city carts of household waste per collection day.

Personal store-bought rollout carts may be used for yard waste only; garbage and recycling require the city carts, and the city does not replace personal carts.

Keep out of household waste carts: wood, metal, glass (windows, fish tanks), bulky items such as furniture and appliances, electronics, recyclables, dirt, rocks, yard waste, propane tanks, tires, paint, automobile oil, batteries, medical equipment, biohazardous materials, bricks, and fluorescent bulbs. Metal has its own Wednesday collection; electronics and tires go to the Ann Street Landfill; hazardous materials go to the county facility on Wilkes Road.

Recycling: Every Other Week on the Same Day as Trash

Recycling is collected every other week on the A/B schedule, in the 96-gallon blue cart, on the same weekday as household waste, at the curb by 6 a.m.

  • Recyclables go loose in the cart. Glass, cardboard, bottles, and paper can be mixed because they are separated at a local Materials Recovery Facility. They must never be bagged.
  • The blue cart is recycling only. Contamination fees are charged back to the City, so garbage and yard waste stay out.
  • One blue cart per household, with two only for households that upgraded before June 30, 2021. Recycling is a contract service, so extra blue carts cannot be purchased.

Accepted categories the city lists include plastic bottles (with or without caps), milk jugs, detergent containers, glass food and beverage bottles and containers in clear, brown, or green, and the paper categories on the city recycling page.

Items that do not belong in the blue cart route to Cumberland County's 16 container sites: sheet glass and mirrors, china, porcelain and ceramic dishes, oil and petroleum product containers, bulky plastic items such as toys and outdoor furniture, and cellophane wrap. Aerosols go to the county hazardous waste center; electronics, tires (up to five per household, without rims), and vehicle batteries go to the Ann Street Landfill. North Carolina prohibits landfilling plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Multi-family complexes of more than 7 units must provide recycling under a 2011 city ordinance, contracting a commercial hauler.

Yard Waste, Loose Leaves, and Large Limbs

Yard waste — grass, weeds, leaves, tree trimmings, plants, shrubbery, pruning, and limbs from yard maintenance — is collected weekly when containerized: green or brown carts, plastic bags, or 32-gallon metal or plastic cans with a tight-fitting lid.

Loose leaves and pine straw are the calendar exception. Un-containerized leaves are collected only November through February, by the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation vacuum operation on a published neighborhood schedule. The rest of the year, leaves must be containerized.

Large limbs are collected on A weeks: limbs up to 5 feet long and 6 inches in diameter, in orderly piles no more than 3 feet high and 10 cubic yards, at least 4 feet from other objects. Piles over 10 cubic yards must be paid for and scheduled.

Contractor-generated yard and limb debris is never collected — not from a landscaping crew, not from a tree service. If a crew cut it, the crew hauls it.

Tree trimming for hazards to overhead power lines or streetlights is handled by Fayetteville PWC, a separate utility, not Solid Waste.

Bulky Items and Metal: Five Free on B Weeks

Bulky items include chairs, tables, children's toys, brooms, mops, and couches. Crews collect up to five items free when placed in an orderly manner at the curb, at least 4 feet from other objects, on B weeks, on the same day as regular yard waste. Six or more items, carpet of any size, and owner-generated construction debris must be paid for and scheduled through FayFixIt, by calling 910-433-1FAY (910-433-1329), or at 455 Grove Street. Metal items such as bicycles, refrigerators, washing machines, and dryers are collected Wednesdays and must be scheduled by phone; the fee schedule applies. Contractor debris is never collected.

2026-2027 Holiday Collection Changes

Fayetteville has no blanket holiday-delay rule. The published table is date-specific and asymmetrical — and some holidays shift service earlier, to the prior Wednesday.

  • New Year's Day, Thu Jan 1, 2026 — Thursday household and yard waste collected Wed Dec 31, 2025; Thursday recycling Sat Jan 3.
  • MLK Jr. Day, Mon Jan 19, 2026 — Monday solid waste moved to Wed Jan 21; Monday recycling as usual.
  • Good Friday, Fri Apr 3, 2026 — collection as usual.
  • Memorial Day, Mon May 25, 2026 — Monday solid waste to Wed May 27; Monday recycling as usual.
  • Juneteenth, Fri Jun 19, 2026 — as usual.
  • Independence Day observed, Fri Jul 3, 2026 — as usual.
  • Labor Day, Mon Sep 7, 2026 — Monday solid waste to Wed Sep 9; Monday recycling as usual.
  • Veterans Day, Wed Nov 11, 2026 — no Wednesday collection.
  • Thanksgiving, Thu Nov 26, 2026 — Thursday household and yard waste to Wed Nov 25; Thursday recycling Sat Nov 28.
  • Christmas, Fri Dec 25, 2026 — Friday household and yard waste to Wed Dec 23; Friday recycling Sat Dec 26.
  • New Year's Day, Fri Jan 1, 2027 — Friday household and yard waste to Wed Dec 30, 2026; Friday recycling Sat Jan 2.

The pattern: Monday holidays push Monday household and yard waste to Wednesday while Monday recycling stays put; the Thanksgiving and late-December holidays move service earlier with recycling on a Saturday. The Collection Schedule page also hosts the Solid Waste Collection Schedule 2026 and 2026 A/B Week Schedule PDFs. These dates belong to one cycle and will be replaced — re-check the table and your lookup each holiday week, material by material.

What You Pay (Fee Schedule as Published)

Fayetteville charges an annual residential solid waste fee, and household waste, yard waste, large limbs, and bulky items all fall under it. The live fee schedule lists $285.00 per year for single-family residences and units in multi-family properties of 7 units or less. The FY2027 budget, adopted June 22, 2026, approved a further $10 annual increase to offset rising fuel and operational costs.

Two things the official pages do not settle: whether $285 already reflects that $10 increase, and how the fee is billed (property tax bill versus utility bill). Verify with the city before quoting or paying.

Other published fee items: an additional brown 96-gallon cart is $60 picked up, or $60 plus $25 delivery, with a 10-year warranty — usable for household or yard waste, never recycling, bought at 455 Grove Street Monday–Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by phone. Premium backdoor service is $250 per year, while backdoor handicap pickup is free. Scheduled bulky collection of 6 or more items is $100 per load up to 20 cubic yards and $357 per load above 20 cubic yards. Scheduled large-limb loads of 10 cubic yards or more are $357 per load. Household construction debris is $50 per load under 10 cubic yards and $100 per load for 10 to 20 cubic yards, with one commode free and two or more at $50 per scheduled collection. Re-verify every amount with the city before paying.

Carts, Missed Pickups, and Backdoor Collection

Carts. Lost or stolen carts are replaced at no cost when it is no fault of the resident; damage from service or normal wear is repaired or replaced free. Vandalism, abuse, odor problems, and carts over ten years old are not covered — a broken brown cart older than ten years must be repurchased. Order extra brown carts through SeeClickFix, 910-433-1329, or 455 Grove Street.

Missed collection. Leave the items at the curb: crews return later the same day or by the end of the next collection day. If still uncollected, report it through FayFixIt or call 910-433-1329. If the cart was tagged for a set-out problem — prohibited items, an open lid, protruding bags, or a cart blocked within four feet — fix it first.

Enforcement. An orange courtesy notice means bring the carts in the same day. A Notice of Violation means an uncorrected issue is assessed by RAPID, the city's Removal and Prevention of Illegal Dumping unit.

Backdoor collection is free for residents physically unable to move carts to the curb, with a physician letter on letterhead showing the office address and phone and stating the resident is under care and needs assistance. Mail or deliver it to 433 Grove Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301, or fax 910-433-1516 — a different address from the 455 Grove Street office used for cart purchases.

Other streams. Household hazardous materials go to the county facility on Wilkes Road; tires and electronics go to the Ann Street Landfill; dead animals on roadways or at the curb are collected on request via 910-433-1FAY or FayFixIt.

Inside Fayetteville City Limits, or Out in Cumberland County?

This is the highest-stakes distinction on the page.

City service covers single-family addresses inside Fayetteville city limits, plus residential units in multi-family properties of 7 units or fewer. Complexes of more than 7 units arrange commercial collection. Residents of other Cumberland County municipalities — including Hope Mills and Spring Lake — and unincorporated county addresses do not receive Fayetteville city collection, even with a Fayetteville, NC mailing address. Cumberland County runs no curbside garbage service of its own.

County context: Cumberland County Solid Waste Management (698 Ann Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301, 910-321-6920) oversees the Ann Street Landfill, a construction and demolition landfill, a compost facility processing more than 40,000 tons of organic material a year, sixteen drop-off container sites, and a recycling program. County homeowners pay a $130 Solid Waste User Fee each year through their property tax bill, which funds landfill, compost, container-site, and hazardous waste center use, with up to 4 cubic yards per week of household garbage and yard waste accepted free when county guidelines are met.

  • Ann Street Landfill accepts household garbage free for fee-paying residents up to about 4 cubic yards or one pick-up-truck load per week; apartments, condos, and townhomes that do not pay the user fee are treated as commercial; loads must be covered and secured (uncovered loads add $10 per load for cars, pick-ups, and trailers, and $25 for commercial and other vehicles); and the site has an electronics recycling area plus tire drop-off.
  • Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 923 Wilkes Road: open the second Saturday of each month 8 a.m. to noon and the fourth Wednesday noon to 4 p.m., one visit per day, county homeowners only — Spring Lake, Fort Bragg, and adjoining-county residents are excluded because they do not pay the county fee. Limit 10 gallons or 80 pounds per visit and 5 fluorescent bulbs per day; latex paint, asbestos, household garbage, medical waste, tires, and unlabeled materials are not accepted.
  • Private haulers. The county lists permitted collectors without endorsing them — Cumberland Garbage 910-483-7100, Town of Hope Mills Solid Waste 910-424-4555, Waste Management 910-488-2827 — and publishes no hauler rates.

One open question to verify rather than assume: whether Fayetteville city residents also pay the county's $130 user fee is not spelled out on the official pages. Ask both the city and the county if you need certainty.

Resident Scenarios

You moved into a house with no carts. Carts stay with the residence. If they are missing, call 910-433-1329. A third cart for yard waste means buying a brown 96-gallon cart at 455 Grove Street.

Trash was out but not taken. Check for an open lid, a protruding bag, or a mailbox within four feet. Fix it, leave the cart out — crews should return later that day or by the end of the next collection day — then report it via FayFixIt or 910-433-1329 if it is still full.

The blue cart was out on the wrong week. Correct weekday, wrong A or B week is the normal biweekly mistake. Check your week in the lookup and set it out again next cycle.

A tree service left limbs on the curb. Contractor-generated limb and yard debris is never collected. The crew that cut it hauls it. If you cut it yourself, pile it for A week within the size limits for free pickup.

You are replacing a couch and a refrigerator. The couch is a bulky item: free on a B week, four feet clear. The refrigerator is metal and must be scheduled for a Wednesday phone pickup.

You rent in a large apartment complex. Parcels above 7 units arrange their own collection; your property manager sets the schedule and the city curbside rules here generally do not apply.

You have a Fayetteville mailing address outside city limits. Service follows city limits, not ZIP codes. Confirm your options with Cumberland County Solid Waste Management at 910-321-6920 or a permitted hauler.

You cannot move a cart to the curb. Ask about the free backdoor exemption with a physician letter sent to 433 Grove Street or faxed to 910-433-1516.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming recycling is weekly. It runs every other week on A/B rotation.
  • Assuming a Fayetteville mailing address means city service. Service follows city limits, not ZIP codes.
  • Setting out contractor debris. Construction debris from a contractor and yard or limb debris from a crew are never collected.
  • Mixing streams. Household waste never goes in the blue cart, and household and yard waste are never mixed in one green or brown cart.
  • Bagging recyclables. They go loose so they can be separated.
  • Using personal carts for garbage or recycling. Store-bought carts are allowed for yard waste only.
  • Leaving carts at the curb overnight after pickup. Bring them in by the end of collection day to avoid notices.
  • Stacking bags beside or on top of carts. Extra bags and non-city containers are not collected.
  • Skipping the holiday table. Some materials move earlier, not later.
  • Trusting a third-party day list. No static list exists.
  • Assuming bulky and limb pickup is on demand. Both ride the A/B rotation — limbs on A weeks, bulky items on B weeks.

FAQ

What day is trash picked up in Fayetteville NC? Household waste is collected once a week, but the day depends on your address and no static list is published. Enter your street number and street name in the city's Collection Schedule address lookup, or call 910-433-1329. City service applies inside Fayetteville city limits only — for a county address outside the city, Cumberland County runs no curbside collection, so you use a permitted private hauler or county sites funded by the county's $130 per year Solid Waste User Fee.

What time do carts need to be at the curb? By 6 a.m. on collection day: one foot from the curb, handles facing your home, at least four feet from mailboxes, other carts, cars, and trees. Take them back by the end of collection day.

How often is recycling collected? Every other week on an A/B schedule, on the same weekday as household waste. Recyclables go loose and unbagged in the 96-gallon blue cart. Fayetteville moved from weekly to biweekly recycling on August 1, 2021.

Can the city pick up furniture and appliances? Up to five bulky items are free on B weeks, on your yard-waste day, four feet from other objects. Six or more items, carpet, and owner-generated construction debris must be paid for and scheduled. Metal items such as appliances and bicycles are collected Wednesdays by phone appointment.

How does yard waste pickup work? Weekly when containerized in green or brown carts, plastic bags, or 32-gallon cans with tight-fitting lids. Loose leaves and pine straw are vacuumed only November through February by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation. Contractor-generated yard debris is never collected.

What are the holiday pickup rules? The rules are not uniform. Monday holidays — MLK Day January 19, Memorial Day May 25, Labor Day September 7, 2026 — move Monday household and yard waste to Wednesday while Monday recycling runs as usual. Thanksgiving 2026 Thursday service moved to Wednesday November 25 with recycling Saturday November 28; Christmas Friday service moves to Wednesday December 23 with recycling Saturday December 26. Good Friday, Juneteenth, and July 3 have no change. Veterans Day, November 11, 2026 has no Wednesday collection.

Who pays, and how much is the fee? Residents pay an annual residential solid waste fee; the city's fee schedule lists $285.00 per year for single-family residences and units in multi-family properties of 7 units or less, and the FY2027 budget adopted June 22, 2026 added another $10 per year. Household waste, yard waste, large limbs, and bulky items all fall under that fee. Confirm the current amount with the city before relying on it.

What if my trash was not picked up? Leave it at the curb: crews return later that day or by the end of the next collection day. If it is still there, report it through FayFixIt or call 910-433-1329 — after checking whether the cart was tagged for prohibited items, an open lid, protruding bags, or a four-foot obstruction.

Where do hazardous waste, tires, and electronics go? Household hazardous materials go to the Cumberland County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center at 923 Wilkes Road, open the second Saturday of each month 8 a.m. to noon and the fourth Wednesday noon to 4 p.m. — county homeowners only, 10 gallons or 80 pounds per visit, and latex paint is not accepted. Tires (up to five per household without rims) and electronics go to the Ann Street Landfill.

How do I replace, repair, or buy a cart? Lost or stolen carts are replaced at no cost when it is no fault of the resident, and service damage or normal wear is repaired or replaced free. Vandalism, abuse, odor problems, and carts over ten years old are not covered. Extra brown 96-gallon carts cost $60 picked up, or $60 plus $25 delivery, through 455 Grove Street or 910-433-1329.

Verify Before You Act

Confirm three things before acting: (1) your exact household waste, recycling, and yard waste days plus your A or B week, by entering your street number and street name in the address lookup on the city's Collection Schedule page or calling 910-433-1329; (2) whether the coming week carries a holiday change — check each material separately, because Fayetteville shifts some earlier and leaves others on the normal day; and (3) any fee, scheduled pickup, or cart purchase requirement, with the city, before paying. If your address is outside city limits, confirm your hauler or county facility with Cumberland County Solid Waste Management at 910-321-6920. The 2026-2027 holiday dates are year-specific and will be replaced. Sources last checked 2026-09-09.
